Jean-Michel Basquiat Dancing in "Downtown 81"

Juxtapoz // Friday, 11 Mar 2011

As we get set to release our April 2011 issue, created in conjunction with the MOCA and their "Art In the Streets" exhibition, we look at a clip of one of the early pioneering films depicting early 1980's NYC graffiti and street culture, the Jean-Michel Basquiat starring, Glenn O'Brien written "Downtown 81."

Even though the film was created in 1980-81, it premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival to very favorable reviews, mostly based on the film's documentary style.

If you have any interest in the roots of street culture and graffiti, this is a must-watch. Especially before you read our April issue and you head to Los Angeles for the MOCA exhibition.
