Twin sisters Ekaterina and Elena Popovy have been meticulously crafting conceptual dolls for the past decade. Their art’s combination of high fashion and dolls creates a distance from humans that is, at times, disturbing.

It’s the ultimate objectification of the body—the creation of miniature, exceptionally strange, mannequins. The Popovy Sisters are from Russia, where their background includes art and fashion design. They initially started their work making portrait dolls based on real people, but then found that a “portrait doll didn’t let us express ourselves as designers.” They have carved their own strange path into a branch of sculpture uninhabited by other artists.
