It would seem an unlikely pair, Sofia Enriquez and her wood cut paintings showing at Phillip K Smith's studio in Palm Desert. But Enriquez's art has a knack for being able to assert itself in a place, and her massive new painting at the center of her newest exhibition, Cambiando, seems like a culmination of all her visual identities.

As the studio notes, "Enriquez's body of work belies the maturity of a woman stepping into her own vulnerability. Her paintings unfurl as a sort of street surrealism wrapped in the symbolism of her life lived thus far. These subconscious self-portraits, presented in Cambiando as individual icons and a large-scale mural, are guided by a rampantly colorful memory perpetually mined by the artist for clarity, understanding, and refinement of mission."
