Pulling from personal history, memory, queer archival records, and folklore, Jacob Todd Broussard’s paintings and drawings examine narrative structures and form while negotiating the instance of meaning-making through images. In his exhibition ‘77 he examines the history of his father’s teenage band formed during that year while simultaneously auto-mythologizing the events of its formation–a union of youths seeking belonging and fantasy. He uses the space of the statement to rewrite its origin as a folktale in the style of a vinyl record's liner notes, an imagined context for an album never recorded.
Jacob Todd Broussard (b. 1992 in Lafayette, LA) lives and works in Buffalo, New York. Broussard received his BFA in Painting from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2014 and his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale School of Art in 2019. His most recent solo exhibition, Invocation was on view at Rivalry Projects in Buffalo, NY in 2022. This past fall, he collaborated with architect Adam Thibodeaux on Mighty Real, a site-specific installation project for Play/Ground New York. He’s shown work in various exhibitions across Louisiana, New York, California, Connecticut, and Canada. He was a 2020/21 Drawing Center Viewing Program participant and a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant for three consecutive years. His work has been written about in Cornelia Magazine and Burnaway. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, FL, the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency in Grainville, NY, and most recently Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh, PA. He is preparing for an upcoming solo exhibition at Towards Gallery in Toronto for the summer of 2023. He and his partner, architect Adam Thibodeaux, run KINGFISH, an independent project space based in Buffalo.
