Baton Rouge Gallery (BRG)– center for contemporary art is proud to announce it is now accepting submissions for Surreal Salon 17, the juried exhibition celebrating pop-surrealist and lowbrow art. Artists worldwide are invited to be a part of this special exhibition, works for which will be selected by Special Guest Juror Evan Pricco, Editor-in-Chief for Juxtapoz, the world’s leading international contemporary art magazine. Artists selected for inclusion in the exhibition will be in the running for more than $2,000 in cash prizes as well as an online editorial feature with Juxtapoz.
The exhibition will be held from January 2 – 29, 2025 at BRG (located inside the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish’s (“BREC”) historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Dr.). During the show’s run, it will be open to the public, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (Tuesday-Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.).
Artists interested in being a part of this unique and exciting exhibition can find more information at batonrougegallery.org/surreal-salon. Artists working in all media are encouraged to submit up to three (3) works for the juror’s consideration. The deadline for submissions is October 18, 2024.
Now entering its 17th year, Surreal Salon is aimed at engaging audiences in an art experience like no other in the region by highlighting the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. Submissions will be reviewed via a blind jurying process that will ensure that works are selected based solely on their artistic merit (the juror does not see an artist’s name until after selections for the exhibition have been made).
In addition to a cash prize, the artist whose work is ultimately named “Best in Show” by the exhibition’s Special Guest Juror will be honored in an upcoming juxtapoz.com editorial focusing on the artist behind the work and the piece itself.
Baton Rouge Gallery would like to thank those sponsoring Surreal Salon 17: Lynne Pisto, John G. Turner & Jerry G. Fischer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Juxtapoz, as well as its longtime partner in presenting Surreal Salon, Louisiana State University’s School of Art.
Over the years, Surreal Salon has enlisted well-known and well-respected jurors for Surreal Salon – including internationally-renowned artists such as Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Marco Mazzoni, Beth Cavener, Elizabeth McGrath, Dan Quintana, Carrie Ann Baade, and Greg “Craola” Simkins - to assist in making Surreal Salon as artistically engaging as possible. That tradition is once again renewed with Juxtapoz Editor-in-Chief Evan Pricco filling this role (thanks in part to a partnership with the Louisiana State University School of Art). He will personally curate the works to be included in the exhibition.
Pricco has been the Editor of Juxtapoz, based in San Francisco, California, since 2006. In 2017, he curated Juxtapoz x Superflat with Takashi Murakami at the Vancouver Art Gallery Museum. He has edited over 17 books for Juxtapoz and hosts the Radio Juxtapoz podcast while continuing to curate exhibitions around the world. He has been a co-curator on the international travelling exhibitions, BEYOND THE STREETS, which serves as an overview of both historic and contemporary moments in the graffiti and street art genres, with the most recent showcases in London and Shanghai in 2023 featuring his curatorial work. In Los Angeles in 2024, he produced and co-curated the works on paper exhibition, I'd Love to See You, a celebration and survey of Juxtapoz Magazine during its 30th anniversary.
BRG invites artists, regardless of media, to review the submission guidelines for Surreal Salon 17 and submit up to three works for the show’s juror to consider for inclusion. Details can be found at batonrougegallery.org/surreal-salon/.
