We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of the great American painter, John Copeland, who passed away at the end of 2024. An artist of compassion, of introspection, of investigation, Copeland was a California-born, NYC-based figurative painter who showed at the likes of V1 Gallery and JD Malat, and once said, "I'm more interested in using the language of painting and working with the edge of abstraction, working with the push and pull of paint, image, readability and texture."
Here is a message from John's gallery, V1 Gallery, in Copenhagen:
We are deeply saddened to announce that John Copeland has passed away.
Incredibly talented, spirited and hard working. Always pushing his practice, never resting on his laurels. An inspiration to many. A curious and beautiful human being that you were lucky to call your friend. John was family to us.
Our love goes out to everybody that knew him – we share your grief and loss.
John, you gave us everything. We will forever love you.
Jesper, Mikkel and the entire V1 team.
