Chefas Projects is delighted to present Almost Young, a series of new paintings by Emily Kepulis. Through illuminated scenes that embody a familiar stillness, Almost Young meditates on the pliability of time – especially its ability to suspend and transform us – and how our perception of it influences our experiences of everything.

For Kepulis, the in-between moments of life – sometimes overlooked as quotidien or mundane – hold the power to charge our human experience just as much as the significant ones. Reveling in the quiet spaces between one moment and the next, Kepulis paints luscious scenes that tend to a certain specialness found in liminality: a drying sheet on a clothesline animated by a breeze, the warm light of either a sunrise or sunset dappled on leaves of a house plant, a goose in mid-flight. Her subjects are both coming and going, neither here nor there, finding themselves through the transition.

While she references family photos, her own past paintings, and even anonymous found photos, Kepulis composes each painting with trust and intuition, allowing its final form to arrive through her observations and reflections. Almost Young explores how the things around us that find us in these quiet moments shape our perceptions of ourselves and how we connect to the larger picture as a whole.
